The diamond was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the founder of the Premier Mine, and was sold to the Transvaal government for £150,000. The government then presented the diamond to King Edward VII on his 66th birthday. The diamond was taken to Amsterdam to be cut and polished by the Asscher Brothers, a famous diamond cutting company.
It took eight months to cut the diamond into nine major stones, 96 smaller stones, and several tiny fragments. The largest of these stones is known as the Great Star of Africa, or Cullinan I, and weighs 530.20 carats. The second-largest stone, known as the Lesser Star of Africa or Cullinan II, weighs 317.40 carats. Both of these stones are now part of the British Crown Jewels, and are on display in the Tower of London.
The remaining seven major stones were also purchased by the South African government and were presented to Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra, and other members of the royal family. These stones were eventually set into a variety of different pieces of jewelry, including brooches, necklaces, and earrings.
